Barcelona, Spain
Gluten free food was absolutely delightful in Barcelona! Since I could eat such a wide range of foods safely, I really went for it!
There are so many allergy-friendly spots in Barcelona that I have only highlighted a few of my favourites in this guide.
I also have a dairy allergy, but that didn’t prevent me from finding lots of options.
Many places in Barcelona are accredited by the Catalonian Celiacs Association, which made me confident about eating there.
1) Jansana Gluten Free Bakery, Carrer de Balmes, 106, 08008
Let’s start with my favourite bakery in Barcelona and perhaps the world! I have visited many gluten free establishments, but I have never tasted such beautiful pastries, cakes, biscuits, doughnuts and bread. The options here are virtually endless. I kept asking if things were really gluten free because they were that good! I took home a giant box of treats and thought each item was 100/100. Xuixos are my new favourite dessert! If you can only visit one gluten free restaurant, definitely go here.
Jansana has a wonderful team and is open 08:30-20:00 Monday-Saturday and 09:00-14:00 on Sunday.
2) Flax and Kale Passage, Sant Pere Més Alt, 31-33, 08003
I chose the Sant Pere Més Alt location—Flax and Kale have many—because this one is 100% gluten free. It has wonderful interiors and a beautiful pizza oven!
The menu was impressively extensive, including lots of plant-based options. I found dishes I have not eaten since I was diagnosed with my allergies, such as ramen and bao.
In addition, the drinks menu was one of the largest and healthiest I have ever seen. You can find just about every superfood in existence here! I ended up ordering a juice, a smoothie and a kombucha because I just couldn’t choose.
The mousse cake for dessert was divine! I left feeling super stuffed but healthy.
The service was also great: we were given a cute little cabin room for dinner.
Flax and Kale Passage is open 12:00-17:00 and 19:00-00:00 Monday-Thursday and 12:00-00:00 Friday-Sunday.
3) En Ville, Carrer del Doctor Dou,14, 08001
This restaurant makes things super easy as everything is gluten free. The menu mixes traditional Catalan and French cuisines. The staff answered all of my menu questions and made me feel comfortable. I would recommend booking ahead; there were no empty tables when we went!
We ordered the paella and a host of tapas. The options could be modified to accommodate my dairy allergy, and everything was delicious.
En Ville is open 13:00-15:30 Monday; 13:00-15:30 and 19:30-22:30 Tuesday-Saturday and is closed on Sunday.
4) Copasetic, Carrer de la Diputació, 55, 08015
We visited Copasetic for dinner, although they offer breakfast, brunch and lunch, too.
I had the tacos and burger, which were delicious. Their pancakes and French toast can also be made gluten free. Definitely check out the fantastic dessert menu!
The staff are really welcoming and, although the people I ate with were not gluten free, they thought the food was great and would be very happy to come back!
Copasetic is open 19:00-00:00 Tuesday; 13:00-00:00 Wednesday-Saturday; 13:00-17:00 Sunday and closed on Mondays.
5) Gula Sana, Carrer de la Diputació, 361, 08009
Try this 100% gluten free eatery if you’re in Barcelona for brunch or lunch. They do several nice brunch items such as eggs benedict, but I hit the dessert counter and tried lots of different cakes and pies! I was also able to get multiple dairy free dessert options. Gula Sana even offer gluten free ice cream cones which are also suitable for vegans!
Gula Sana is open every day 09:00-21:00.

6) Sofitel Hotel breakfast
The hotel caters well to allergy sufferers. They designate a separate gluten free food area with its own toaster. They also provide lots of dairy free options.
The staff was extremely helpful: one of the chefs spoke with me to find out my particular needs. She prepared eggs and other hot items for me personally every day. I felt totally safe, and the food was delicious. They also have vegan, low carb and keto options.
I was only in town for a few days, but I managed to stop by the Mercado de la Boqueria, which is definitely worth a visit and has a whole range of excellent foods. Other places I would have loved to try include Hanai, which is a vegan and gluten free dessert shop, and Messié Pizza. The gluten free options in Barcelona are truly extraordinary!
